Table Scraps: Blue Ivy Theories

“Hello Hello Baby Blue!  We are happy to announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born on Saturday, January 7, 2012.” -Joint statement from Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Beyoncé’s website, 1/9/12

Immediately, the internet was aflutter with various theories for the meaning behind the name…

“Welcome Baby Blue!  They obviously chose to name her Blue because it has to do with power, sophistication, and loyalty.  The color blue is very rich and often comes in different shades, just like Beyoncé and Jay-Z themselves.” – Ms. Florence Gander, Art Department Head, Ben Franklin Regional High School, Maryland

“Blue Ivy is like, such a symbol for something familiar, yet super out of the ordinary. Extraordinary, even. Because like, Blue is a color, and like, Ivy is a plant. Ya know? Ohmigod, they can do no wrong!” – Jill Bean, President of the Blue Ivy Carter Fan Club

“It’s clearly a marketing ploy.  Beyoncé and Jay-Z are two savvy business people who know where the future lies. Blue Ivy Carter. BIC.” – Josef Camden, Marketing Coordinator, BIC Pens

“It’s obviously a tribute to Bob Dylan’s ‘Tangled Up in Blue’ because, well, ‘Blue,’ which is in the title, and ‘Ivy,’ which is really easy to get tangled in.” – Misha Spernbaum, VP, Bob Dylan Maniacs of Minnesota

“B is the 2nd letter of the alphabet, L is the 12th, U is the 21st, and E is the 5th. They are all connected to the number 2, except for E, and sometimes, 5′s look like 2′s on digital clocks when you look at them in the mirror. So BAM. 2. Everyone knows ‘Ivy’ is IV, the roman numeral for 4, which is twice the number 2.  Blue Ivy is 2 names.  Beyoncé and Jay-Z had a baby. That’s two people.  There’s a connection here.” – Phil Durge, mathematician/total idiot

“I think it’s great. They both love the color blue. And Ivy is such a pretty plant. I looked deep into my soul when naming my children. I really subscribe to the idea that you should name your kids after something you have a significant, spiritual connection with. ” – Gwenyth Paltrow

“Think about it.  Blue Ivy Carter.  Mere letters away from Blue Ink Cartridge.” – printers

“If you rearrange the letters in Blue Ivy, you get EVIL BUY. They bought this child from the devil.” – Mary St. Crane, Mothers For Christ

“If you rearrange the letters in Blue Ivy, you get BIL UVEY. That’s my kid.” – Bill Uvy, crazy person

“If you rearrange the letters and then arrange them back, you get BLUE IVY. That’s saying something.” – Ron Paul
